Starr’s journey in agriculture began with a degree in Plant and Soil Science, followed by 11 years as a farm inspector for CCOF in Santa Cruz and organizing statewide sustainable agriculture conferences. Today, she channels that deep expertise into her fifth year of commercial flower farming. Her connection to the soil is deeply personal, often feeling close to her great-grandmother while working among the blooms.

For her, the ultimate joy lies in truly understanding a plant’s lifecycle and using her harvests to design beautiful events. During the pandemic, she co-created a stunning 110-foot lavender labyrinth from seed—a drought-tolerant haven for pollinators.

As an industry pioneer, she historically helped shape early organic farming practices alongside legends like Amigo Bob and even earned the prestigious "Golden Pliers" Award. On the farm, she uses her unique eye for design trends, marketing, and networking to drive business success.

Still, she notes that farming is a 24/7 commitment requiring a strict rhythm and reliable community. Facing common industry hurdles like chasing timely buyer payments, she knows first-hand how demanding the work is.

She encourages everyone to volunteer at a farm to truly appreciate how beauty is grown.
